Government of India founded the Central University of Tamil Nadu, along with eight other Central Universities, through an Act of Parliament in 2009. It is part of the greater role that the Central Government assumed in making higher education accessible to aspirants from the weaker sections of the society. The University sits astride a major tributary of the famous Cauvery river in the heart of the Delta seven kilometers to the north-west of Thiruvarur.
Its primary areas of tutelage being journalism and mass communication, the Department of Media and Communication has drawn from the best of industry with academic indulgence to pump itself with some professional nourishment. Launched in 2013, this department is now being forged ahead with five permanent faculty members.
This department offers a two-year Master’s course in Mass Communication (M.A., Mass Com), with the core areas being journalism, film studies, television, radio, short film, documentary, community media and new media, apart from communication research. It also offers Ph.D in Journalism and Mass Communication.
We have an exclusive-dedicated media lab and auditorium space for screening movies and studio-recording. We bring out a students’ magazine—Opus. Apart from regular training, we also bring industry experts to the department to widen the exposure of media students. An in-house community radio is also in the pipeline.
