Press Council of India (PCI)
- The Press Council of India was first constituted on 4th July, 1966 as an autonomous, statutory, quasi-judicial body, with Shri Justice J R Mudholkar, then a Judge of the Supreme Court, as Chairman1.
- It is the self-regulatory watchdog of the press, for the press and by the press, that operates under the Press Council Act of 19782.
- The Council has a chairman – traditionally, a retired Supreme Court judge, and 28 additional members of which 20 are members of media, nominated by the newspapers, television channels and other media outlets operating in India. In the 28 member council, 5 are members of the lower house (Lok Sabha) and upper house (Rajya Sabha) of the Indian parliament2.
- Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad is Chairman of the Council as of 2015.
RNI
- The Office of the Registrar of Newspapers for India, more popularly known as RNI came into being on 1stJuly, 1956, on the recommendation of the First Press Commission in 1953 and by amending the Press and Registration of Books Act 18673.
- The Press and Registration of Books Act contain the duties and functions of the RNI. On account of some more responsibilities entrusted upon RNI during all these years, the office is performing both statutory as well as some non-statutory functions3.
- Dr. Sadhana Rout a 1984 batch senior IIS officer is the current press registrar.

ABC
- ABC founded in 1948 is a not-for-profit, voluntary organisation consisting of publishers, advertisers and advertising agencies as members4.
- The Bureau issues ABC certificates every six months to those publisher members whose circulation figures confirm to the rules and regulations as set out by the Bureau4.
