Assertion (A): Developmental communication needs a complete overhaul to meet the changing economic environs of the developing world

Reason (R): The corporatisation of media management and the domination of electronic media, particularly television, has prompted a re-think in this direction

(A) Both (A) and (R) are true

(B) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

(C) (A) is true, but (R) is false

(D) (A) is false, but (R) is true

Correct Ans: (A)

Explanation:

The correct answer is (A) Both (A) and (R) are true.

Today’s fast-evolving global economy demands that developmental communication adjusts accordingly. Developing nations now face complex economic shifts. These include rapid urbanization, digital transitions, and changing public expectations. Because of this, older models of communication—focused mostly on top-down messaging—can no longer deliver the same results.

Now let’s consider the reason. The corporatisation of media has drastically changed how content gets produced and distributed. Large media houses now dominate the narrative. Their primary motive revolves around profit. At the same time, electronic media, especially television, has become the main source of information for millions. It influences opinions, spreads ideas, and sets public discourse.

Clearly, this shift calls for a complete overhaul in how communication strategies function within the development space. Old-school developmental models that rely only on community radio or printed pamphlets can’t compete with high-speed television broadcasts and digital platforms. So, communicators need to craft messages that are both effective and media-friendly.

Moreover, this transformation affects not just the content but also the tone, format, and delivery of communication. Campaigns now must engage, educate, and entertain—all at once. They should also work across platforms like social media, mobile phones, and streaming services. Otherwise, they risk getting ignored.

So, both the assertion and the reason hold true. Developmental communication does need an upgrade. And yes, the growing corporate control of media and the power of electronic media are key reasons why this change has become urgent.

To sum up, the need for reform is real. And the media landscape explains exactly why. Therefore, option (A) is the most accurate choice.
