Decline of Old Media Amidst New Media Growth

Assertion (A): There is a decline in the popularity of the old media as new media penetrates the society.

Reason (R): Because the ownership of new media is not centered on one person or one organization.

(A) Both (A) and (R) are true.

(B) Both (A) and (R) are true, but (R) is not the correct explanation of (A).

(C) (A) is true, but (R) is false.

(D) (A) is false, but (R) is true.

Correct Ans: (B)

Explanation:

Old media, such as newspapers, radio, and television, is losing its dominance as digital platforms take over. The rise of social media, streaming services, and online news portals has shifted audience preferences. People now prefer on-demand, interactive, and personalized content, making traditional media seem outdated.

New media’s widespread accessibility and interactive nature allow users to create and share content freely. Unlike old media, which is controlled by a few organizations, new media platforms operate in a decentralized manner. However, ownership structure alone is not the main reason for the decline of old media.

Other factors contribute significantly to this shift. Faster news updates, multimedia storytelling, mobile access, and global reach make new media more appealing. Additionally, advertising revenue has shifted to digital platforms, further weakening traditional media.

Since both the assertion (A) and the reason (R) are true, but R does not fully explain A, the correct answer is option (B). The decline of old media is due to digital transformation, audience behavior, and advertising shifts, not just ownership decentralization.
