A Rich History
Then-President Dr. Rajendra Prasad established this prestigious award on January 2, 1954. Initially, it recognized achievements in art, literature, science, and public service. However, in 2011, officials broadened to include any field of human endeavor, thereby reflecting the evolving landscape of human achievement.
An Artistic Marvel
The illustrious artist Nandalal Bose, a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, designed the Bharat Ratna medal as a work of art in itself. Interestingly, he shaped like a peepal leaf and crafted it from bronze, it features an image of the sun and displays “Bharat Ratna” in Devanagari script on the obverse. Moreover, the reverse side proudly shows the State Emblem of India and the motto “Satyamev Jayate.” Furthermore, the medal is hangs from a pristine white ribbon, symbolizing purity and honor.
Inclusivity and Recognition
What sets the Bharat Ratna apart is its inclusivity. Importantly, it recognizes all people without regard to race, occupation, gender, or position, and is open to all, regardless of nationality. Whether for contributions to art, literature, science, public service, or the cause of peace and human welfare, the Bharat Ratna honors those who have made a profound impact on society. Additionally, it can even be awarded posthumously, provided the death occurred within five years of the recommendation. However, it is not conferred upon individuals convicted of criminal offenses or those guilty of depraved or wicked behavior.
The Process of Selection
The journey to receiving the Bharat Ratna begins with the Prime Minister of India, who makes recommendations to the President after seeking approval from the Union Cabinet. Various sources, including state governments, central ministries, members of Parliament, and eminent persons, can submit nominations. Ultimately, the President of India holds the final authority to confer the award, which offcials announce on the eve of Republic Day (January 26) or on other special occasions. Consequently, the award is presented by the President at a ceremonial function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, adding a touch of grandeur to the honor.
