Journalism that promotes civic commitment and citizen participation in democratic processes is known as(A) Advocacy Journalism(B) Public Journalism(C) Alternative Journalism(D) Counter media Correct Ans: (B) Explanation: Public journalism, also known as civic journalism, plays a vital role in supporting democratic societies. It aims to go beyond simply reporting the news. Instead, it encourages citizen engagement, fosters public dialogue, and promotes active participation in democratic processes. Rather than just observing events, public journalists try to become part of solutions. They raise awareness of community issues, invite public opinion, and often highlight efforts to bring about positive change. Unlike advocacy journalism, which promotes specific viewpoints or causes, public journalism seeks to maintain neutrality while still pushing for civic commitment. Moreover, unlike alternative journalism, which often operates outside mainstream media, public journalism usually works within traditional media frameworks but shifts focus to community problem-solving. For instance, public journalism initiatives may include town hall meetings, interactive news forums, or collaborative projects that involve citizens in shaping news coverage. These approaches help people feel heard and empowered, which in turn increases trust in the media and supports democratic health. Furthermore, public journalism actively reshapes the reporter’s role. Journalists don’t just act as watchdogs or informers—they act as facilitators of public discussion. This shift encourages greater accountability, both from the media and the citizens it serves. In conclusion, public journalism serves as a bridge between media and society, promoting awareness, action, and democratic values.
