Relief printing (15th Century).

Relief prints are of the raised surface design on the block, the rest of the surface is cut away, only the raised portion is inked. Water-based inks are used. Examples of relief-printing processes include woodcut, metal cut, wood engraving, relief etching, linocut, rubber stamp, foam printing, potato printing, and some types of calligraphy¹.

Intaglio printing (1430s)

Intaglio printing is the opposite of relief printing, in that the printing is done from ink that is below the surface of the plate².

Rotary printing (1843)

A rotary printing press is a printing press in which the images to be printed are curved around a cylinder. Printing can be done on various substrates, including paper, cardboard, and plastic.³

Offset printing (1875)

Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique in which the inked image is transferred (or “offset”) from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface.⁴
