Question 46 of 50
46. Question
2 pointsCategory: Paper II- June 2011- Mass CommunicationRead the passage below, and answer the questions that follow based on your understanding of the passage : The following are the areas where mass media researchers might encounter ethical dilemmas : (i) Voluntary participation and informed consent; (ii) concealment and deception; and (iii) protection of privacy. All of these general ethical concerns apply to advertising research also. In addition, there are some ethical concerns that are unique to this area. Two of the most controversial are research about advertising to children and ‘push-polling’. A tremendous amount of advertising is directed towards children. Not surprisingly, much advertising research is conducted with children. Is it ethical to conduct research that uncovers new ways of making advertising effective with this group ? Many social critics argue that children are a vulnerable audience and should be shielded from all forms of advertising. These same people would argue that research that helps advertisers further manipulate this group is not ethical. In 1999, a group of psychologists called on the American Psychological association to restrict the use of psychological research designed to help sell toys, snacks, video games and other products to bids.
The second area, “push-polling”, often crops up in political campaigns. At its worst, push-polling involves a bogus public opinion poll put into the field by candidate A in an attempt to spread dirt about candidate B. The push poll would contain negative and often incorrect information about candidate B designed to push the voters away from supporting him or her. Most researchers would condemn this form of polling as unethical. The line becomes less clear, however, in other situations. When constructing an ad campaign for a candidate, it is often helpful to know what negatives about the opponent should be stressed. Some legitimate polling might include information that might have negative connotations, (e.g. “Are you aware that candidate B has been twice divorced ?”). The appropriate amount of negative items to include can be a difficult ethical problem.
